Commuter railway in Kyiv region (and other cities in Ukraine) has always been an inter-city transport which connected Ukraine's capital with its neighbouring cities like Koziatyn, Korosten or Fastiv. Unfortunately the concept of city train such as London Overground, Berlin S-Bahn or RER Paris was non-existent until recent times: once a commuter from Fastiv had reached Kyiv city limits, it had to transfer to either metro or weird small minibuses (marshrutkas) to reach the desirable destination. This lead to further overcrowdment of the already overcrowded metro: it has only 3 lines, which is second to nothing in a 5-million city.
Druing the HUEFA EURO 2012 football championship Kyiv was expected to host a lot of visitors, this forced the government to make some improvements to the transportation infrastructure. So, in 2010 Kyiv Urban Elektrychka (colloquial Ukrainian for "electric multiple unit") or Kyiv S-Bahn was launched for the first time in the former Soviet Union.
My last year attemt to test it failed due to the crappy schedule: the elektrychka runs only in mornings and evenings specifically for commuters. This time I arrived to Kyiv main train station early in the morning and wanted to get to Zhuliany (IEV) airport. Unlike Boryspil airport it is located within the city limits and can be reached by trolleybus from Shuliavska metro station or by the elektrychka from Kyiv Pasazhyrskyi (main station) to Kyiv Volynskyi. This is just two stops:

The issue of travelling from the main station to Zhuliany airport was discussed at Lonelyplanet forum:

At the main train station urban train of needed direction always departs from same platform - so-called Pivnichna 1 (Northen 1) - entrance to it is near entrance to metro - but you must bypass metro entrance from right, turn right near stairs with some steps up and then walk down to the platform.

I have to add that it is not easy even for Ukrainian to find where the northern platforms are. This is because there are no signs and the entrance looks like Grand Bazaar:

One you pass it you'll notice that you are actually standing on the bridge. Pivnichna 1 platform is located on the left:

A ticket costs 1.70 UAH (~15 eurocents), while for metro you have to pay 2 UAH and 1.50 UAH for the trolleybus, so you save 1.80 UAH. This huge amount of money can be invested in Ukrzaliznytsia shares, so that you can promote the development of rail transportation in Ukraine.

They give you a ticket and a tocken which you have to insert into left turnstile (for some weird reason, as it is not locked):
The elektrychka runs every 20 minutes and looks like this:

Although it was (and is) not intended for visitors, the train has HUEFA EURO logo on it:

It's 10 minutes ride to Kyiv Volynskyi, just like in Zurich of Frankfurt airport. Surprisingly, the train was not crowded at all. After arrival I first left the platfrom and only then realised I was on the wrong side. One has to cross this bridge first:

This is how Kyiv Volynskyi station looks from the bridge:

And then turn left. White building on this photo is an old (now domestic) terminal, but there are still no signs to the airport as if it doesn't exist:

That's fucking why you need to have a map when going there for the first time. It takes about 15 minutes to get from the station to international terminal:
